João Gilberto- Chega De Saudade (1959)

I've been listening to this LP a lot recently and I've come to the conclusion that if you only ever listen to one Bossa Nova record then this should be the one.

Milton Banana Trio- O Trio

This tight trio, led by the Bossa Nova drummer, Milton Banana, was made up of extremely accomplished and prolific musicians, all of whom had contributed to classics of Bossa Nova by artists such as Gilberto, Getz , Jobim and Toquinho. Milton himself had drummed on João Gilberto's 1959 hit Chega de Saudade (Tom Jobim/ Vinicius de Moraes). He later had a relationship with Elza Soares . Banana was acording to Ruy Castro 'a mad Botafogo fan' who enjoyed a drink- his reaction at losing out to Mané Garrincha in the romance stakes is, as far as I know, unrecorded.
This is the Trio's 1968 Odeon LP.

Wanda de Sah

Wanda de Sah (sometimes known as Wanda Sá), enrolled at Roberto Menescal's guitar academy at 13 . She went on to appear on the TV programmes Dois no Balanço (TV Excelsior) and O Fino da Bossa (TV Record). Wanda turned professional at 19 with the LP Wanda Vagamente (1964), one of Eumir Deodato's earliest arrangement credits. Wanda had already had a number of hits in Brazil by the time she joined Sérgio Mendes' Brasil '65 .

In 1966 she recorded this LP in the U.S.A. The record was aimed at the American audience who were being seduced by the 'new sound' from Brazil, the numbers being mostly Bossa standards - some Brasil '65 songs as well as Jobim and Getz/Gilberto compositions, would have already been familiar to North American listeners. The backing was provided by Capitol Records studio musicians, arranged by Jack Marshall and produced by David Cavanaugh, best known for his work with Frank Sinatra.

Elza Soares - Vivo Feliz

I would like to dedicate this post to Niall, whose generous praise is greatly appreciated.

A happy life?
Born in a favela in Rio in 1937, Elza was raped when she was 12. Because she became pregnant she had to marry the man who raped her. Her first three children died as newborns, but she was a mother of four by the age of 25. Elza had her first taste of success on Ary Barroso's radio show when she was still in her teens. Soares became popular with her first single Se Acaso Você Chegasse, on which she sang Louis Armstrong style scat with her trademark husky voice, combining samba and jazz .
After finishing her second LP, A Bossa Negra, Elza went to Chile to represent Brazil in the festival that accompanied the 1962 FIFA World Cup. It was there that she met Mané Garrincha. Of course, we've had posts on Mané Garrincha (1933-1983) here before, and there will be more in the the future- the most talented individual ever to play football- as Alex Bellos wrote: Pelé was admired, Garrincha was adored.

According to tradition Elza entered the dressing room where the players were celebrating and embraced the naked Mané, who had made a tremendous contribution to Brazil's success throughout the tournament.

At the time Mané still lived in the same abject style as when he had been a textile worker. He was married to Nair Marques (married in 1952, they divorced in 1965), a factory worker from Pau Grande with whom he had eight daughters. He also fathered two children with another Pau Grande girl, Iraci, whom he 'kept' in Rio, as well as a son by a Swedish girl he had met whilst on tour with Botafogo. By the time of his death he had fathered at least 14 children.
Mané and Elza married in 1966; as Elza had also been married before, the Brazilian press were critical of the marriage.
The couple were harassed by neighbours in the upmarket Rio suburb where they lived; when they visited Pau Grande they were attacked. The public resented the apparent wordly influence that Elza exerted over Mané- for example he began to negotiate more just contracts with his club. In the past he had been content to sign blank contracts and allowed his earnings to rot away in drawers in his house. As Mané's famously crooked legs began to give out and he played less he succumbed to alcoholism, and their relationship became increasingly stormy. Shortly after the 1966 World Cup Mané crashed his car, killing Elza's mother. His record with cars was not good- he had previously run over his father and Elza had had some teeth smashed out in another prang* . Mané was also sexually insatiable, and had affairs. His virility, and his large penis, were the stuff of legend- in 1959 a song in his praise was suppressed because the line Mané, who was born in Pau Grande sounded very much like Mané, who was born with a pau grande, which is slang for big dick.Ruy Castro, his biographer was sued by members of Mané's family for asserting that his manhood was 25cm- the judge booted the case out- how could it be libel to say that a Brazilian man was well hung? Strangely no one took offence at Castro's revelation that Mané's earliest sexual experience had been with a goat...apparently not unusual in Pau Grande in those days.
Mané and Elza separated in 1977, when she left him after he struck her. (In the notorious psychometric testing prior to the 1958 World Cup Mané had scored zero for aggression).

Elza Soares remains active in the world of music, and she is not afraid to move with the times. There are a number of her records available to download at Loronix, from the early jazz-samba through to the samba-soul sound of the 1970's.In 2000 the BBC gave her a Singer of the Century award.
Here is 2004's Vivo Feliz album , which mixes samba and bossa with modern electronic music and effects, and features collaborations with a number of leading techno/hip-hop/ artists (I'm never to sure of the terminology for the modern stuff. Anyway- it's a great sound).
Here's the link: http://rapidshare.com/files/377788825/Elza_Soares.rar

* this bad luck with cars would haunt the family into the next generation-
In 1985 Mané and Elza's son Garrinchinha died in an auto crash on the same stretch of road on which Elza's mother had died. His son (with Iraci) Nenem, who played for Fulminense, died in a car crash in 1992. His grandson was run over and killed in Pau Grande in 2001.

Walter Santos is not such a big name outside Brazil, but at home he was counted as one of the major stars of the Bossa Nova movement.
He started out in the Os Enamorados do Ritmo group together with Joao Gilberto.
This LP came out in 1963 at the heighth of the Bossa Nova boom.

Charlie Byrd Plays Jobim...

Charlie Byrd was first introduced to Brazilian music in the late 1950's by radio host Felix Grant. In 1961 Byrd participated on a diplomatic tour of South America for the United States State Department,On his retirn to the States, Byrd was working with Stan Getz, whom he introduced to bossa nova recordings by João Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim that he had acquired on his trip. The result of their shared enthusiasm was 1962's Jazz Samba LP.
Byrd remained a devoted champion of Brazilian music for the rest of his career. The tracks on this LP of Jobim compositions were recorded at various sessions between 1982 and 1999.

Echoes of Rio- Antonio Carlos Jobim

In 1977 and 1979 Tom Jobim recorded two LPs with the singer Miúcha (Heloísa Maria Buarque de Hollanda- at one time Mrs Joao Gilberto).
This 1989 RCA release compiles a number of tracks from these two records.

Here is a fantastically thorough discography on which details of these recordings can be found:

Sylvia Telles- U.S.A (1961)...

Sylvia Telles (1934 - 1966) made her recording debut in 1957- a record that featured Antonio Carlos Jobim as arranger and conductor on two tracks. Sylvia would later record a great number of Jobim compositions.
She appeared at Faculdade de Arquitetura (May 21st 1960), which was the first Bossa Nova festival. This is another early example of the marriage of Bossa Nova to US jazz, featuring the great Barney Kessel on guitar and Calvin Jackson on piano.

Sylvia Telles tragically died in a car crash in December 1966, aged just 32.

Sitti...

If the disposition of the people that I have met from the Philippines is anything to go by it must be a wonderful country.
We know the Philippines has produced probably the greatest boxer of the modern era in Manny Pacquiao and possibly the greatest billiards player ever in Efren ‘Bata’ Reyes- The Magician.
But Bossa Nova?
Here’s lovely Pinay singer, Sitti.
Maybe not pure Bossa, she does lots of pop covers, but nice and fresh and not the worst way to include a Philippines artiste in your record collection…
Her work is readily available- so just as a taster I’ve put together 10 songs- 9 well known Bossa Tunes and a song from Bacharach and David.

A Garota De Ipanema
A Certain Sadness
Mas Que Nada
Agua De Beber
Berimbao
Wave
One Note Samba

Elis & Tom...

For this 1974 LP Jobim got together with the immensely popular Elis Regina (1945 – 1982).
Known affectionately as furacão (hurricane) or pimentinha (little pepper), Elis sold over 80 million albums. Her premature death sent the whole of Brazil into mourning, and a memorial event at São Paulo's Estádio do Morumbi attracted 100,000 people.
This LP is widely considered to be one of the greatest Brazilian records, and in 2001, Águas de Março was named as the all-time best Brazilian song in a poll of more than 200 journalists, musicians and other artists conducted by leading newspaper, Folha de São Paulo.
Elis openly disliked Tom Jobim , referring to him as a bore,dim-witted, and an old fogey whilst they were working on the LP . However the combination did revive her career, and if you view the video of them performing together you would never guess!

Ithamara Koorax sings Luiz Bonfá...

We have mentioned before the importance of guitarist and composer Luiz Bonfá (1922 - 2001) in the evolution of the Bossa Nova genre.
In 1996 he was in the studio with carioca Ithamara Koorax recording a selection of his works.

It's an honor and a privilege to work with such a great artist as Ithamara, one of the best singers in the world-Luiz Bonfá.

Baden Powell- Samba Bencao

Ok- we've had Pierre Barouh's version so here is the maestro's original.
Bencao means blessings, and the term Saravah, which means good luck originates in Candomblé (a religion which was taken to Brazil by African slaves).

Un homme et une femme...

There are any number of reasons for grabbing this LP, the soundtrack of Claude Lelouch's 1966 classic Un homme et une femme (composed on the whole by Francis Lai). For a start, in the title track it contains what for me is the epitome of 1960's romantic music. It is the anthem of Kartoshka167! Secondly we have Samba Saravah- actor Pierre Barouh was an admirer of Bossa Nova and a personal friend of Baden Powell- here he sings his own version of Baden and Vinicius de Moraes' Samba da Bencao .

A Garota de Ipanema ...

Helô 1967

...the paradigm of the young Carioca: a golden teenage girl, a mixture of flower and mermaid, full of light and grace, the sight of whom is also sad, in that she carries with her, on her route to the sea, the feeling of youth that fades, of the beauty that is not ours alone — it is a gift of life in its beautiful and melancholic constant ebb and flow.- Vinicius de Moraes

Ask people to name one Bossa Nova song and the chances are that it will be A Garota de Ipanema (The Girl from Ipanema), composed in 1962 by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes.
First recorded by Pery Ribeiro (1962) the song was made internationally famous by Astrud Gilberto, João Gilberto and Stan Getz ( featured on the Getz/Gilberto LP of 1964, Garota won a Grammy for Record of the Year in 1965). It has since been covered by a vast number of artists.
Despite the fact that the song, originally titled Menina que Passa (The Girl Who Passes By) was composed for a musical comedy titled Dirigível , the composers happily played along with the popular myth that it was inspired by Moraes and Jobim watching local girl Helô Pinto walk past the Veloso bar in Ipanema. They later went so far as to agree that they had actually written the song about Helô.
Consequently Helô Pinheiro (as she now is) is The Girl From Ipanema. This worked in her favour in 2001 when the families of Moraes and Jobim sued her over her use of the name for her business venture, a chain of boutiques in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro . She won the case.

Born in 1943, Helô appeared in Brazilian Playboy in 1987 and once again in 2003, showing that at age 60 she still had what it took to turn the heads of any budding composers who might be sitting at Veloso’s bar…

Here is Helô's website:http://www.garotadeipanema.com.br/historia_e_fotos_garota_de_ipanema.htm

Bossa Nova...

I was thinking the other day- what does Bossa Nova actually mean to people these days? What image does it conjure up in their minds? We already know that Mattinho dismisses it as cruise ship music- and I found out from a quick survey of people around the neighbourhood of Kartoshka Towers that most people think it's something to do with ballroom dancing, or Latin music played on a combo organ.
I've put together this compilation as a quick sampler for those who might not have had the opportunity to listen to Bossa Nova and who might as a consequence dismiss it as kitsch, easy listening, lounge or elevator music.
Most of the songs here are well known and may be available elsewhere on this blog.
It's not an exhaustive or definitive compilation, just 40 minutes of good listening featuring some of the main figures in the Bossa Nova genre.

I hope that aficionados will indulge me over the choice of records and also over this necessarily brief potted history:
Bossa Nova evolved in Brazil in the latter part of the 1950’s, and Bim-Bom (1956) by João Gilberto is considered to be the first Bossa Nova song. Gilberto- along with Jobim , Luiz Bonfa and the poet lyricist Vinícius de Moraes created many standards of the genre.
Being more complex and less percussive than the Samba from which it derives- Bossa Nova also had a more refined and upmarket image.
In Brazil itself Bossa Nova was made popular by Elizete Cardoso's interpretation of Chega de Saudade by Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes on her LP Canção do Amor Demais. Joao Gilberto also scored a hit with this number. The 1959 film Orfeu Negro brought the style wider exposure, and American Jazz musicians began collaborating with Brazilian artistes , creating a Bossa Nova boom in the States.
This in turn led to Brazilian artists migrating to the USA, where Bossa Nova was crucial in the development of the cool jazz style.
Brazilian composers (most notably Jobim) continued to produce lushly orchestrated works awash with strings whilst still employing the rhythmic staples and intimate understated styles of Bossa Nova.
This is not a perfect synopsis and not all key figures are mentioned- but it’s a place to start if you are not familiar with the story of this seductive and engaging musical style.
